Its intricate structure and mind-bending functions have left scientists scratching their heads (pun intended) for centuries. But this captivating three-pound wonder holds secrets beyond our wildest imagination. Let’s understand the anatomy and function of our brains today!

Starting With Something Fun About Our Brain!

Did you know that your brain weighs around 3 pounds? That’s like carrying a small melon in your head! But here’s a surprising fact: about 60% of your brain is made up of fat.

The remaining 40% of your brain is a mix of water, protein, carbs, and salts. But here’s something cool: your brain isn’t a muscle. It’s more like a computer made up of many tiny wires called neurons.

Blood vessels and nerves are like small messengers transmitting crucial information inside your brain. Neurons are the brain’s “superstars.”

Let’s Come To The Important Parts: Here Comes Cerebrum!

The brain is divided into different parts, each with its own job to help our bodies and minds work together.

The Cerebrum: 

One important part is called the cerebrum, located at the front of the brain. The cerebrum comprises gray matter, known as the cerebral cortex, on the outside, and white matter in the centre.

The cerebral cortex is responsible for interpreting information from our senses, such as what we see, hear, and touch. It also helps us regulate emotions, think and reason, and learn new things.

The cerebrum is the biggest part of the brain, making up about 80% of its total size. It’s like the CEO (chief executive officer) of our mental abilities, overseeing and controlling many important functions.

Deep within the cerebrum, there’s a special layer called the cerebral cortex. It’s like a bumpy outer coating, often called “gray matter.” The cortex is pretty important because it makes up about half of the brain’s weight.

Coming to the cool parts of the cortex, which we call the lobes!
  • Frontal lobe: It’s located right behind our foreheads, like a boss sitting at the control centre. This lobe is all about decision-making, problem-solving, and shaping our personality. It’s like the chief executive officer (CEO) of the brain, making sure everything runs smoothly and keeping us in charge of our actions.
  • Parietal Lobe: The parietal lobe is situated towards the top and back of the brain. Its main job is to help us understand sensations and perceptions. It allows us to make sense of things like touch, temperature, and our awareness of space and where our body is in relation to our surroundings.
  • Temporal Lobe: The temporal lobe is located on the sides of the brain. It’s like a superstar when it comes to memory and hearing. This lobe helps us remember events from our past, recognize familiar faces, and enjoy the wonderful melodies of our favourite songs.
  • Occipital Lobe: The occipital lobe can be found at the back of the brain. It’s like having our very own movie theatre! This remarkable area processes all the stunning visuals that come our way. It’s responsible for our ability to see colours, shapes, and everything in the world around us. It’s where the magic of vision happens.
Let’s Jump To The Cerebellum And Brainstem!
The Cerebellum: 

While the cerebrum takes care of the big thinking, the cerebellum focuses on the little details of movement and coordination. It also has two hemispheres, just like the cerebral cortex. The outer part of the cerebellum contains special cells called neurons, and the inner part communicates with the cerebral cortex.

The cerebellum is responsible for maintaining your balance, posture, coordination, and fine motor skills. It’s located at the back of your brain. Think of the cerebellum as the brain’s personal choreographer, ensuring that your movements are smooth, graceful, and precise. Whether you’re dancing or catching a ball, you can thank the cerebellum for keeping you balanced and coordinated. 

The Brainstem:

Ah, the brainstem, the unsung hero that connects the brain to the rest of the body. It consists of three parts: the midbrain, the pons, and the medulla.

Situated at the base of the brain, the brainstem acts like a central communication hub. It’s responsible for relaying messages between the brain and the body’s essential systems.

The brainstem takes care of our basic functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and digestion. It’s like the behind-the-scenes champion that keeps everything running smoothly, allowing us to focus on the more exciting aspects of life.
