Other countries, including Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, are also poorly ranked in the report. The report also highlights the negative impact of social media on the young population. What is The World Happiness Report
The World Happiness Report is a landmark survey of happiness, first published in 2012. The happiness scores and ranking are made by using data from the Gallup World Poll. This provides reliable and rigorous data for governments, businesses and NGOs to craft policies, programs and strategies. The scores in the Happiness Report are based on answers to life evaluation questions asked in the poll. The questions ask respondents to rate their current lives on a scale of 0 (worst possible life) to 10 (best possible life).
The scores on the six factors ( GDP per capita, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and perception of corruption). These are compared to the hypothetical country Dystopia. This is an imaginary country with the world’s least happy people. It is established to have a benchmark against which all countries can be compared. Therefore, it can be stated that the lowest score on the six factors is characterised by Dystopia.

Key highlights of The World Happiness Report 2026
- Nordic countries lead the happiness rankings with Finland securing first rank in the report, with the score of 7.764, for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Iceland at rank 2, scoring 7.540 and Denmark at rank 3, scoring 7.539.
- The lowest in the ranking is Afghanistan at 147th rank, securing a score of 1.446, Sierra Leone at 146 with a score of 3.251 and Malawi at 145 with a score of 3.284. These countries are ranked lowest as they’re affected by conflict.
- A major improvement in ranking is shown by Costa Rica, which was ranked 23rd in 2023 to rank 4 in 2026. It attributed its increase in well-being to a boost in family bonds and social connections. Switzerland ranked 20th in 2026, while it was ranked 13th in 2025. India also showed improvement by ranking 116 in 2026, while it was ranked 118 in 2025, but it still remains behind neighbouring countries like Pakistan (rank 109) and Nepal (rank 92).
- The report of 2026 has drawn attention towards the link between heavy social media usage and a decline in well-being among young people. This impact is severe among teenage girls in English-speaking countries and Western Europe.
- There is a sharp decline in life satisfaction among those aged under 25 in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. The reason behind this fall is identified as excessive social media usage.
- People who reported using social media for less than one hour reported higher well-being and life satisfaction, even than the non-users. Platforms that use algorithmic feeds, influencers and visual content are reported to be the most harmful as they encourage social comparison.
Finland’s Happiness Formula
Finland for past 10 years remains the happiest country. The reason behind this is high social support and low corruption. Apart from this, residents also point towards the high social safety to the extent that children walk to school from age 7 without feeling threatened. Also, although there are high taxes, all major things in life, including education, healthcare, and transportation, received is of high quality.
Also, Finnish workplaces are reported to be more collaborative than those in any other country. Another important factor is their proximity to nature, which influences it. What is evident from this is that basic needs such as security, safety, stability and predictability have a great influence on our life satisfaction and happiness. It is not something that can be achieved individually but requires societal structures and community-level cooperation. This raises the question that to achieve success and growth we are sacrificing the basic conditions of happiness?
