In a significant step towards strengthening India’s indigenous medical technology ecosystem, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS)  has launched an Endovascular Innovation Laboratory and unveiled a prototype of an indigenous thrombectomy device named ‘Parichay’, designed for acute stroke intervention. The initiative is expected to boost innovation in neurovascular treatment while reducing dependence on imported medical devices (NIMHANS, 2026).

The announcement was made during the one-day workshop titled “Atmanirbhar Bharat in NeuroScience IPR”, organised at NIMHANS in Bengaluru. The event brought together researchers, clinicians, industry representatives, innovators and policymakers to discuss intellectual property rights, medical technology development and the commercialisation of healthcare innovations (NIMHANS, 2026).

A Major Push for Indigenous Stroke Care

Stroke remains one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide, requiring rapid intervention to restore blood flow to the brain. Mechanical thrombectomy devices are commonly used to remove blood clots in patients suffering from acute ischemic strokes. However, such devices are often imported and expensive, making treatment inaccessible for many patients.

The unveiling of the ‘Parichay’ thrombectomy device prototype represents an important milestone in India’s efforts to develop cost-effective and locally manufactured neurovascular technologies. According to NIMHANS, the device has been conceptualised to support acute stroke treatment while promoting self-reliance in high-end medical equipment manufacturing  (NIMHANS, 2026).

Endovascular Innovation Lab to Drive Research

The newly inaugurated Endovascular Research Laboratory has been established with support from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and the Anusandhan National  Research Foundation (ANRF), Government of India. The laboratory is expected to serve as a hub for translational research, innovation and prototype development in endovascular and neurovascular technologies (NIMHANS, 2026).

Experts believe that the facility will help bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical application by providing scientists, neurosurgeons and engineers with a dedicated platform to collaborate on developing next-generation medical devices.

Fostering Innovation Through Intellectual Property

A key focus of the workshop was the importance of intellectual property rights (IPR) in healthcare innovation. Discussions centred on patents, copyrights, technology transfer and strategies for protecting indigenous scientific inventions. NIMHANS stated that the initiative seeks to encourage researchers and healthcare professionals to transform innovative ideas into commercially viable products while ensuring that intellectual property generated within the country is adequately protected (NIMHANS, 2026).

Strengthening the Vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat

The launch aligns with the Government of India’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, which emphasises domestic manufacturing, technological innovation and reduced dependence on imports. By promoting indigenous research and medical device development, NIMHANS aims to contribute to a stronger healthcare ecosystem capable of addressing India’s growing burden of neurological diseases (NIMHANS, 2026).

As one of India’s leading neuroscience institutions, NIMHANS has consistently played a pivotal role in advancing neurological research, patient care and medical education. The introduction of the Endovascular Innovation Laboratory and the ‘Parichay’ prototype is expected to accelerate India’s emergence as a global contributor to affordable and innovative healthcare technologies.
