Delhi Student Community Helps Building Collapse Victims

The student community in Delhi has reached out to support victims of the tragic building collapse that claimed seven lives. The PG HostelDaze collapsed after alleged construction work caused the structure to fall while students and workers were on the premises. The area near Delhi University’s south campus is favoured among non-resident students for its close proximity to the University. Several educational institutions and students have stepped in to provide shelter, food, clothes and water, etc. to those in need. 

Student bodies are joining hands across Delhi to provide verified updates on the situation besides helping with SOS numbers, helpline and guidance for those affected and their families. Colleges are providing temporary shelter as well as psychological assistance to students from HostelDaze as well as other hostels who had to evacuate after the tragedy, according to The Times of India. Seven people, including five students have been reported to have passed away. The collapse has once again zeroed in on Delhi’s poor accommodation options, including illegal construction, exorbitant prices for shared rooms, lack of emergency infrastructure and non-compliance with basic safeguards.

Strong Student Support 

It was students and civilian volunteers from the Satya Niketan market area who rushed immediately to help trapped students before official help could arrive. The first responders manually pushed themselves to do whatever they could while students soon arrived with necessities and other support as word spread. Gen Z took over social media with regular and verified updates, ensuring that peers, families and others were updated about the situation regularly. Food, medical supplies, clothes and shelter were offered round the clock, leaving no stone unturned for anybody in and around the area who was affected by the PG Collapse.

Impact on Students and Parents

A vast majority of Indian students travel to big cities like Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore to access top universities and educational facilities. Parents send their children away in hope of providing them with better opportunities and exposure. It is a move that is rife with worry, doubt and stress for several families who separate from each other for the first time. Such a tragedy instils fear and distrust in India’s contribution to educational facilities. Several colleges in crowded cities like Delhi lack adequate on-campus accommodation, forcing students to search for cost-effective options that are geographically convenient but not always safe. 

The Psychological Impacts of Tragedies

The extent of psychological vulnerabilities that come with loss from accidents can have long-lasting impacts. Victims will experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), panic attacks,  anxiety and depression. Individuals who have witnessed it or lost a loved one to it can experience the same, including isolation, distrust, prolonged loneliness, deep sadness, secondary stress, etc. Loss of a home or loved one can trigger insecurity, forgetfulness, sleep and mood disorders, among many others. Self-blame and suicidal intentions are also inevitable for survivors or close friends in tragedies like the HostelDaze PG Collapse.

Significant Measures as Priority

The Onus falls singularly and foremost on state and local Governments and authorities to ensure that such tragedies never repeat themselves. It requires absolute transparency in investigation, safety audits and a strict lockdown on illegal constructions and unchecked development. As the need for student accommodations grows across the country, government and official stakeholders have to create a foolproof, sustainable plan that ensures no repeat of the Delhi PG tragedy.
