Albert Bandura, who proved that we don’t learn only by reward and punishment, but also by imitation, passed away this morning. #NaomiOsaka and #SimoneBiles become an example of how his theories are vital to changing behaviour in a high reward and punishment environment. https://t.co/bJc1ShxlHW

The birth of Albert Bandura was on 4 December 1925. He was a well-known Canadian American Psychologist. Bandura was awarded with various honorary degrees from various universities like The University of British Columbia, The University of Lethbridge, The University of Ottawa Alfred University, The University of Rome, The University of Salamanca in Spain Indiana University, The University of New Brunswick Penn State, University Leiden University Freie, Universität Berlin, etc
Albert Bandura is remembered as the originator of social learning theory and develops self-efficacy and the 1961 Bobo doll experiment. This Bobo doll experiment demonstrated the concept of observational learning in which Children learn by observing and imitating the aggressive behaviour of the models. Social learning theory is a Cognitive-Behavioural theory of learning that proposes that we acquire new behaviours simply by observing it along with the consequences that follow it (consequences can be favourable and unfavourable). In Social Learning Theory, the core concepts are Observational Learning, reinforcement (direct or vicarious), Learning as a cognitive behavioural process and Identification with a model. The applications of Bandura’s Social Learning theory in everyday life for the smooth functioning of the real world are in sectors like Healthcare, Schools, Homes, workplace, etc. There are main three main concepts of social learning theory. Firstly people can learn through observation; the secondly internal mental state is essential for all of this process. Finally, this theory states that just because something has been learned, it does not mean that it will have resulted in a change of behaviour in an individual learnt by observing the consequences of behaviours.
In his book Social Learning Theory (1977), he explained that “Learning would be exceedingly laborious, not to mention hazardous if people had to rely solely on the effects of their own actions to inform them what to do.”
Work on Self Efficacy is another success of Bandura. Albert Bandura defined self-efficacy as “the belief in one’s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to manage prospective situations. Self is actually a belief of a person in his or her own abilities to succeed in a particular situation. It describes of how people think, behave, and feel. Self-efficacy can impact on everything from our psychological wellbeing to emotional health as the lifestyle we are living in. According to Bandura, there are four major sources of Self Efficacy are Mastery Experiences, Social Modelling, Social Persuasion, and Psychological Responses. Albert Bandura also has contributions to the field of education, such as social cognitive theory, therapy, and personality psychology, etc.
The loss that we all encountered as psychology professionals is unbearable, but we need to understand and apply his psychological principles in real life for better futuristic orientations.
