The youth in the present age is a powerful asset required for the abundant energy of the country and the overall development of the country. The role of youth is essential to shape the future of its country. India’s freedom struggle is one such example. Where you notice that many revolutionaries in their youth played a significant role in gaining independence from the British Empire. Youth is an important stage of life. As time has changed, so have the ways and directions of life. Today we see young people facing new expectations and challenges to live in the 21st century. In this age of competition, young people must be aware and stable about mental health.
Young people are enthusiastic, innovative. Youth show intense passion, motivation, and willpower. This will also make them the most valuable human resource and encourage the economic, cultural, and political development of the country. India can provide skillful resources to the world. But youth in India facing many problems, Whether it’s education, career, job, business, family or personal life problems, young people always seem to be under mental stress. We see these youngsters struggling with different mental stresses, mental struggles as they move forward with new hopes as they struggle to prove the rules of the new world by adapting to various changes in life. Young people are living under extreme stress due to family unrest, parental discord, financial discord, unhappy family environment, lack of emotional support, intense stress, separation or divorce, substance abuse or addiction, unnecessary constraints, unemployment, excessive use of social media. If these problems are not solved, they can go the wrong way and they may lose the right path and become depressed. Suicides are on the rise among young people. The second major cause of death among children between the ages of 15 to 29 is suicide. Young people are addicted to drugs due to peer pressure, curiosity, new experiences, ignorance, imitation, modern lifestyle, etc. Harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs in adolescents is a major concern in many countries and leads to behaviors such as unprotected sex or dangerous driving. The film Udta Punjab shows how young children abuse drugs and become addicted. Obesity is considered a serious and widespread health problem in modern lifestyles. The U.S. National Health and Nutrition Assessment Survey predict that by 2030, 86% of young people in the United States will begin to suffer from obesity. In India too, children from affluent families in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai, and Bangalore are falling prey to fast food. Sitting down at work all day, constantly watching t.v., overuse of gadgets such as a computer, laptop, mobile, etc. does not get time for exercise. The result of such a modern lifestyle is that eye diseases and obesity appear in youth.
Information technology is evolving very fast and of course, it has many benefits. As much as breathing is essential for survival, today the use of social networking is being used more than necessary. Social media has become an essential factor for young people. The average time spent on social media by adults is 1.72 hours per day. This number is higher for adolescents up to 27 hours a week. Therefore, Excessive use of social networking is endangering the mental health of young people. Many people use social media. But many people can’t control themselves, and so they are addicted to social media. There are many severe consequences of social media addiction such as becoming lazy, staying away from reality. Video games and online games are very popular among children and young people. Many times we hear the news that the parents did not give the child a mobile to play the video game so the child committed suicide. This shows that children are addicted to video games. Selfitis is more common in young people. This means that young people have a habit of taking selfies and posting them on social media several times a day. Mental illness is also on the rise due to cyberbullying, constant trolling on social media, and negative reactions. Overuse of smartphones and social media has led to an increase in the incidence of many mental illnesses in youth, such as depression, online game addiction, Facebook addiction disorder, psychosis, social dilemma, dementia, PHOMO (fear of missing out), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Are attached. A survey by the Ministry of Health found that more than 50% of young people suffer from depression. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare The survey was conducted with the help of J. J. hospital psychiatrists. Mental illness is on the rise due to the overuse of the internet and social media. In the past, the symptoms of psychosis were more prevalent in the elderly, but now it is increasing in the younger generation. Therefore, there is a need for mental health awareness among the youth. The positive effects of mental health can be promoted everywhere if young people are given mental resilience to recognize the mental problems that come up in their lives and deal with them competently. If the mental health problem is addressed in its early stages, then the stress and anxiety caused by mental illness can be prevented. Young people need to be trained to think and act on their mental capacity and to deal with life’s problems and stress, and if we give them mental health education, we can help them live a life of mental empowerment. Teaching children good and bad from an early age is less likely to lead to bad behavior later in life. If young children understand the importance of time, be aware of reality, exercise, cultivate hobbies, take care of their health, follow a nutritious diet, then it builds their self-confidence. We can help youth in terms of mental health by training health workers and improving those processes to enable young people to detect and manage mental health disorders. Giving young people business and job-based training while they are in college, can help them in getting a job or doing business later at the standard level. Young people need to focus on skills-based learning as well as practical knowledge. Excessive use of social media has many side effects such as leaking of personal information, etc. Since it is also important for young people to use social media for work. Young people should participate in raising awareness about mental health globally. Young people should take initiative for this.
* Why psychology is important?
Psychology is the scientific branch that studies human behavior and cognitive processes. From this, If we look at the nature of psychology in the 21st century, it is an integral part of our lives. The first national discussion session on Indian psychology is one of the most important recent milestones in the psychological movement, explaining the nature of psychology in modern India. It was jointly organized by the Board of Philosophy Research of India and Swami Vivekananda Yoga Research Institute in Bangalore from 26 to 28 December 2007. A total of 120 research papers on various topics related to Indian psychology were presented in this discussion session. As a scientific branch, Indian psychology is on its way in the 21st century. Today there are many institutes and universities in our country that offer numerous psychology courses. Psychologists can be of great help in the development of a nation. Many problems like mental health problems, social problems, poverty, illiteracy, urbanization problems, environmental degradation, and disease control cannot be solved by good financial planning alone. So for this, we have to change the attitude and faith of the people. For that, we have to create motivation in them. And this requires the help of a psychologist. Psychologists will have to make an effort to overcome these obstacles. That is why psychologists need to break the current curriculum and join hands with other social scientists. Psychologists are moving in this direction and research and guidance work on various social issues is underway in our country. People need to be sensitive to mental health issues. It is imperative to take initiatives for mental health awareness. Efforts should be made for this at all levels of society.
* Awareness about mental health is important.
The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience (NIMHANS), the country’s leading organization in the field of mental health, estimates that 13% of the total population in India needs treatment for mental illness. In Maharashtra alone, the number of patients in need of treatment for mental illness is estimated to be at least 1 crore. Only 10% of the people in the country need treatment for mental illness. This means that 90% of people do not seek treatment even though they need it. The main reason for this treatment gap is the wrong attitude of the society towards mental illness or the feeling of stigma. Because of this, we need to look at mental health positively and make every effort to raise awareness about mental health. This requires initiatives by administrations as well as social organizations and people. The broadcast network Times Network has launched an initiative called ‘Act Now’. The initiative aims to raise awareness about mental health, normalize conversations on mental health issues, and sensitize people to the elements needed for the mental health of others. It calls for taking appropriate action to support people’s deteriorating mental health without prejudice and fear. The initiative was launched on the special edition of ‘Mirror Nows Urban Debate’, in which an expert panel analyzed and discussed the deteriorating state of mental illness in India. This study shows that awareness levels related to mental health and illness have increased recently, but appropriate information needs to be disseminated to address stigma, ignorance, and lack of mental health care. Conversations about mental health are the most important solution to this problem. We must take the initiative.
