A team of researchers and neuroscientists recently identified a new function of the human somatosensory cortex. It is a circuit inside the human brain that only activates after people get injured by something. However, the best part about this research was that the neuroscientists claim that the elimination of chronic pain inside a person’s body is possible by silencing a specific cell, while preserving acute pain responses in the body. It therefore will not hinder the brain’s work of signalling danger.
Identifying the Pain Circuit
A study published in [Nature], a popular journal, gained the attention of a wider population. It stated that approximately 60 million Americans are living their life with chronic pain! Therefore, this work of neurologists is highly promising for the treatment of such patients. This research gained its support from the NeuroChoice initiative. The brain is a highly crucial commanding machine for the human body, as all the daily tasks & decisions are performed by the people with its help. It warns us against dangerous situations of any kind.
However, pain is also a significant response of the body as it motivates the organism to seek healing and to work on the wound to ease it. What makes chronic pain different from normal pain is that it lasts for a longer period of time and has a chance of recurring even after healing. The time span after which pain is considered and counted as to be in the category of chronic pain is 3 months. According to the psychologists, people who suffer from chronic pain are at a greater risk of struggling with issues related to mental health and opioid misuse.
Neurologist Chen stated that in chronic pain, the brain misinterprets touch to be a painful stimulus. Therefore, the researchers started working on the identification of this specific neurological circuit loop, which is responsible for this misinformation.

Research Details
Some previously conducted research has shown that it’s possible to reduce pain with the help of Electrical Stimulation. It is a kind of technique that requires electrical currents delivered with the help of electrodes into a person’s skin, which eases the pain. However, with this research, the neurologists intended to identify a full circuit responsible for chronic pain.
The neurologist’s team started working backwards from a group of neurons. This gave a new turn to the lead, discovering an unknown circuit loop that originated inside the spinal cord, thalamus, Cortex, brain stem, & Back to the spinal cord. By chemically silencing that circuit in mice, the team showed it was the specific circuit that was responsible for chronic pain. By silencing this group of cells in the body, the sensitised pain goes away, said the neuroscientists.
Major findings
The experiment gave the team of neuroscientists a kind of confirmation that this specific circuit was what they were looking for all this time, and it had a role to play in the development of chronic pain. The researchers discovered that these specific groups of cells were not engaged in normal pain, but rather caused chronic pain that lasted long inside the body after a person suffered from an injury, or even some kind of inflammation.

Chen stated that the discovery of this new circuit inside the human body does not mean that the previously proposed way, PAG – RUM pain systems, are not relevant today. Rather, it is highly possible that these 2 circuits control the pain in different ways. While the newly identified circuits and systems work in a way that increases pain, the old method, PAG-RUM, works towards the reduction of pain inside the body. Chen, along with his research team, thinks that the reduction in the amount of pain, as well as an increase in it, are things that are controlled by 2 very separate circuits.
With this discovery, the researchers now intend to search for some kind of molecular changes and drugs that hold the potential to block these circuits’ signals. All this would cause a reduction in chronic pain. The neuroscientists are also working on a dataset of patients to identify whether this could work in humans.
