Samay Raina’s ‘Still Alive’: When Controversy Meets Mental Health

After receiving backlash over a controversy involving ‘India’s Got Talent’ leading up to an FIR, several negative comments on social media, and pulling the show down from the air, comedian Samay Raina was under a lot of scrutiny from the public about what happened and what the incident would cause him personally.

‘Still Alive’ as More Than a Comeback

Raina reflects on this time in his life through his Specials Still Alive, with his title suggesting survival, not only on a professional side but also on an emotional side. Raina’s Special is not only laughing at life but also has components of helping him deal with life through humour

The Mental Health Strain: Pressure in the Public Eye

According to Raina, he was experiencing feelings of fear, guilt, anxiety, as well as psychosis-like symptoms since the tragedy occurred. Many professionals have pointed out a link between these emotions. For instance, fear can cause anxiety; guilt can increase one’s level of distress, and longer periods of exposure to stress may alter the way people feel or think.

Raina experienced intense scrutiny from the public due to the controversy surrounding him. In addition, throughout this time, he was believed to be suffering from tremendous anxiety. This illustrates that a large level of media attention and public criticism can produce psychological stress very rapidly.

A Larger Conversation

Samay Raina’s life shows how complicated and interrelated mental health challenges can be; she also shows that many well-known people have mental health issues and the accompanying physical problems.

Still Alive’s central theme is the dichotomy between how we cope with adversity (difficult times)  in our lives versus our ability to endure through them (survive). The degree to which individuals respond to adversity can vary; some express themselves (writing or speaking about adversity),  while many do not express themselves through verbal communication.

Still Alive’s overarching message is that this memoir illustrates more than the controversy surrounding the author’s experiences, but further shows the emotional toll of coping with the pressures associated with the concept of celebrity (fame), public scrutiny and mental illness at once.
