A kit to support children with dyslexia has been launched by Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) recently in July 2025. MDA was founded by IIT Madras Alumnus D. Chandrashekar. The non-profit organisation was formed with a group of parents of children with special needs to create awareness and support for children with dyslexia. The newly developed toolkit titled “Count on Me” has been designed primarily to make Mathematics fun to study. It has already been used in 50 cities.

Fear Of Maths

Mathematics has always been a subject associated with anxiety and fear. It is a commonly shared emotion not just by one who scores less in maths exams but by a huge population of students and even adults. Therefore, maths phobia is a term given to understand these emotions. Thus, the association’s goal for the toolkit is to make the subject joyful, engaging, interesting, and meaningful.

What Is Specific Learning Disability (SLD)

It is an umbrella term used for individuals who face persistent difficulties in basic academic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics. It consists of four categories: dyslexia ( major difficulty in reading and writing), dyscalculia (major concerns in mathematics), dysgraphia (major problems in writing expression), and dyspraxia (major issues in motor skills).

Note A formal diagnosis is required by a team of counsellors/psychologists and a clinical psychologist for SLD and a further disability certificate.

Who Is The Kit For?

Though the kit is specifically designed for children with Learning Disabilities such as dyscalculia. However, it has a value and worth for use with all students to make Mathematics accessible. D. Chandrashekar explained that the toolkit is for both categories of students, those who face challenges in mathematics and others who are eager to explore. “It is designed for every teacher who has ever asked How can I help this Student learn in a way that works for them”.

Toolkit

The kit consists of material for both teachers and students to make mathematical concepts concrete, clear, and confidence-building. For children, there are graded, colour-coded booklets, manipulatives, and engaging visuals. For teachers, it features instructional videos, functional checklists, and digital e-manuals. Thus, enabling precise remediation, creative teaching, and inclusive learning.
