The foundation stone of Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), sector 32, Chandigarh was laid by the former Prime Minister of India, Shri Chandra Shekhar on January 20, 1991.
Department of Psychiatry was started in February 1994 at Polyclinic, sector 22. The OPD services Were shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital, sector 32, in June 1995. The department has 10 faculty posts in psychiatry, 3 faculty in clinical psychology, two faculty in psychiatric social work, and two faculty in psychiatric nursing the department also has eight psychologists and clinical psychologists and 11 posts of medical social workers and psychiatric social workers. The Department of Psychiatry provides indoor, outdoor, emergency services, and community outreach services.

M Phil (clinical psychology):
M Phil in clinical psychology aims at generating highly skilled and competent human resources for delivering clinical psychology services as well as undertaking research. The course intends to give a comprehensive coverage of psych diagnostic assessment, counseling and psychotherapy, family and marital therapies, behavior medicine and cognitive behavioral therapy, child and adolescent mental health, management of substance abuse, psychosocial rehabilitation, and neuropsychology.

Minimum duration of the course shall be of two years divided as parts one and Part 2. The minimum educational requirement for admission to this course will be two years MSC degree in psychology from a university recognized by UGC with a minimum of 55% in aggregate. Admission requirements include – A candidate shall apply to the director principal of government Medical College and Hospital GMCC Chandigarh online on www.gmch.gov.in. Documents required at the time of the interview are, final matriculation certificate showing date of birth, all mark sheets of a qualifying exam, cast certificate in original, character certificate in original. The provisionally eligible candidates will be allowed to appear in entrance examination which will be conducted by GMCH, Chandigarh in accordance with the decision of the university. The selection of candidates shall be made on the basis of merit in the entrance exam. To be eligible for admission, a candidate must score the following minimum marks in the entrance exam, general category – 50% and reserved category-45%. The medium of the entrance examination will be English. The paper for entrance examination will be of 100 Marks and will consist of MCQS. The duration of exam will be 2 hours. There will be no negative marking. List of qualified candidates according to their merit and entrance examination in their respective category will be displayed on the notice board and website of government Medical College and hospital, sector 32, Chandigarh. A minimum attendance of 80% shall be necessary for taking their respective examination along with the summary and fee as prescribed by the syndicate from time to time. 30 days of casual leave, a maximum of 15 days per academic year, shall be permitted during the two year course.
MPhil (psychiatric social work):
In two years program, the candidates will be exposed to application of methods, techniques and skills of social work for promotion of mental health, prevention of mental disorders, therapeutic intervention at individual, group and family levels as well as aftercare and rehabilitation and institutional and same institutional settings.
