Imagine two people making the same big decision: whether to quit a stable job and start something new. One opens her horoscope app and reads that “an exciting opportunity is heading her way this month.” The other sits down with a career psychologist, takes a validated personality assessment, and reviews years of data on which traits actually predict entrepreneurial success. Both walk away feeling more confident about their future, but only one is standing on real evidence. Each year, millions of people rely on horoscopes, online personality tests, and career counsellors to predict the future, and psychology has spent decades trying to answer the same question using data instead of guesswork.
Although the discipline does not claim to forecast future events the way a fortune teller does, psychology offers personality tests, statistical models, and behavioural forecasting methods that quantify the likelihood of certain outcomes with far greater accuracy than a horoscope. Some psychological tools have been validated by extensive research, while others that look scientific on the surface have been thoroughly debunked. This article will discuss the strengths and limitations of personality testing and behavioural forecasting, examine the underlying psychological theories, and separate psychological truth from myth.
Personality Testing: What Can and Cannot Be Predicted
Most commonly, personality tests are the first step in any endeavour to read people’s future. The Big Five personality traits model, in particular, is regarded as the most scientifically validated assessment of personality. Research conducted by Ozer and Benet Martínez (2006) revealed that the five traits, i.e., openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism, can predict such diverse outcomes as one’s work performance, physical health, quality of social relationships, and even life expectancy. Trait conscientiousness, for example, consistently accounts for higher academic achievement and professional success.
Despite the scientific validity of the Big Five personality factors, other personality assessments were not subjected to thorough testing and may yield rather unreliable results. According to Pittenger (2005), the popular Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has been “a remarkably resistant myth”, largely due to its ability to provide an accurate description of one’s personality as they expect it to be. The test, which asks respondents to answer questions regarding their attitude toward certain activities and characterise themselves in terms of pairs of opposite traits, was found to have low reliability. Thus, Pittenger (2005) notes that “one out of every ten returns on the MBTI falls into a different category after only a few weeks have passed.”
The apparent accuracy of the test derives from people’s expectations, as demonstrated by a similar concept called the Barnum effect. Forer (1949) demonstrated that students accepted a personality description that was identical for everyone as accurate, thus explaining how cold reading can make horoscopes or personality tests seem authentic when they are, in fact, generic.

Behavioural Forecasting: Can People’s Actions be Predicted?
A different area of psychology, commonly regarded as the science of prediction, is concerned with analysing behaviour and forecasting tendencies. According to a classic article by Meehl (1954), psychological assessment is about comparing clinical intuition to statistical prediction. The author examined the accuracy of prediction methods, finding that “a mechanical application of a prediction formula” significantly outnumbered human judgment. Similarly, Grove et al. (2000) conducted extensive research, reviewing 136 studies to demonstrate the superiority of statistical prediction.
Statistical formulas are applied in a wide range of fields, from criminal law to medicine, because they provide a consistent basis for assessment that takes into account multiple factors. Grove et al. (2000) argue that the relative simplicity of the approach is the main reason why it has been demonstrated to consistently outweigh individual judgment in most cases and is even employed by superforecasters, people who achieve significantly higher prediction accuracy than their peers.
When it comes to predicting individual behaviour, context plays a significant role. Mischel (1968) investigated the possibility of predicting complex human behaviour. He concluded that personality traits as consistent characteristics cannot account for behavioural variability. That is, a person can behave differently in different settings; for instance, one may be responsible at work but not at home. In other words, a person-situation interaction theory does not deny the fact that personality determines behaviour, but rather it stresses the importance of situations.
Another perspective was suggested by Tetlock (2005); he argued that a certain mindset may be necessary to engage in predictive reasoning. The author investigated the accuracy of experts and concluded that most of them only scored slightly better than expected when trying to predict political and economic events twenty years ahead. On the other hand, a group of “superforecasters” demonstrated that it is possible to achieve high accuracy in prediction, even for events involving complex social interactions. If one breaks the task into smaller components, continuously updates the assessment, and takes competing possibilities into account.

Science of Prediction: How Predictive is Psychology?
As discussed in the readings, psychology is best at making probabilistic statements rather than making definite conclusions, particularly when analysing individual behaviour, as opposed to statistics. Dawes, Faust, and Meehl (1989) suggest that researchers should use a statistical procedure whenever they have validated it. It should be applied instead of relying on an individual’s common sense, intuition, and untested assumptions.
This perspective aligns with the basic principles of philosophy, particularly the distinction between evidence and unsubstantiated speculation. Thus, although personality tests and behavioural assessments can provide valuable insights. People should not rely on them when making critical decisions about their future. This nuance is rarely taken into account by people who base at least part of their life choices on astrology, horoscopes, cold reading, and other similar practices that are not grounded in science.
A critical difference between legitimate psychological assessment and astrology lies in the ability of the former to generate falsifiable, testable statements, whereas the latter relies on unfalsifiable claims. In other words, a psychologist who utilises statistical analysis can state with a high degree of confidence that a certain person has a seventy per cent chance of experiencing burnout given certain conditions, whereas an astrologer can claim that a person will experience a disaster in their personal life sometime in the next month. The first statement makes a probabilistic prediction that evidence can support or disprove, making it scientific. The second, however, is not only unfalsifiable. But also significantly narrower, essentially claiming that an event will occur in a specific timeframe.
Psychology vs. Astrology: Common Myths
Astrology is one of the most widespread examples of false prediction emanating from the public perception of psychology. The main hypothesis of astrology is that the location of celestial bodies at the moment of one’s birth determines his or her personality and predicts future events. However, Carlson (1985) describes astrology as a pseudoscience and notes that multiple well-controlled tests have demonstrated its invalidity, challenging the claims on which astrology rests. Notably, one such experiment. Researchers published the study in Nature, where professional astrologers evaluated the relationship between people’s birth charts and their personalities. The study found no consistent relationship between the two. Therefore, astrology has repeatedly failed the simplest test of validity, falsifiability, and repeatability. In contrast, psychology is a science. Extensive empirical research supports this view across numerous aspects of personality and behaviour.
Another common myth is that personality tests and accurate predictions are a sign of a good psychologist, who can read people’s minds. In actuality, no personality test or prediction tool is perfectly reliable or valid, even when using statistical analysis. Most statistical indicators are not devoid of uncertainty, which means that one should always remember that the result of an event may not be a given.
In addition, people very often confuse validity and reliability when examining personality tests. According to the Barnum effect, people may interpret vague and general personality descriptions as accurate reflections of themselves. A similar phenomenon occurs when users of horoscopes or personality quizzes believe in the accuracy of their results, which are often based on a few generic replies. An essential lesson of psychology is to distinguish between vague, universally applicable, and feel-good statements and facts, which is vital in separating legitimate psychological assessments from cold readings.

Psychology does not offer certainty about the future, and it never claims to. What it offers instead is a set of tools, personality assessments like the Big Five, statistical prediction models, and forecasting techniques, that have been tested against real outcomes and shown to outperform both gut instinct and pseudoscience. The key difference is falsifiability: evidence can prove a psychologist’s probabilistic prediction wrong and allow researchers to correct it, whereas astrology does not offer the same testable process. This is the defining line between a science and a belief, even though both are essentially making predictions. None of this means psychology is always accurate, though, as many well-established psychological measurements such as the Big Five only have general accuracy. A slightly less scientific measurement such as the MBTI can fail basic statistical tests.
The most valuable piece of knowledge a reader could gain from this article is being able to ask themselves, ‘Is this prediction using testable evidence, or does it simply sound right?’. And developing the ability to make that differentiation is useful not only for personality or astrology readings. But for a much broader set of topics, from making personal choices to trusting someone with an important decision. Psychology doesn’t predict the future. It calculates the odds and leaves the rest to chance, while the stars dictate a fixed fate.
