Brushing teeth isn’t really a decision for most people. It’s just a reflex at this point: grab, squeeze, scrub for two minutes, done, no debate involved. That is the weird thing about habits. They sit in the background of people’s lives running on their own, like some app installed years ago and forgotten about. Psychologists have questioned the “why” of this for a long time now. Turns out it is not that deep. Habits were never really choices. They’re loops. And once the loop is understood, the whole thing stops feeling mysterious and starts feeling almost like an infrastructure.

The Loop Nobody Notices

Most people know this from Duhigg’s book, cue, routine, reward; it’s basically the strategy psychologists still use (Duhigg, 2012). The cue is just whatever initiates it. It could be nothing more than a time of day. Could be a room, a mood, or somebody walking in. The routine is the actual behaviour, the part that eventually stops needing any thought at all. And the reward is whatever reward the brain gets from it, which is usually smaller and quieter than people think. It is not always pleasure; sometimes it’s just relief. A break from being bored. A small hit of feeling in control again.

What really drives the loop isn’t any one piece of it; it’s just doing it over and over. Same cue, same routine, enough times, and eventually the brain starts expecting the reward before the routine’s even finished. That is why old habits stop feeling like choices (Duhigg, 2012). Somebody who grabs their phone the moment a conversation goes quiet isn’t deciding anything at that moment. The decision, if people even call it that, happened way earlier, somewhere back around the first few times it happened.

Where Behavioural Psychology Comes In

None of this is actually new. Behaviourists were circling this same idea a hundred years back, long before anyone could look inside a brain and confirm it. Pavlov’s dogs are the example everyone reaches for, and it’s the same pattern that shows up in people. The dogs started drooling at a bell alone, no food needed, once he’d paired the two enough times (Pavlov, 1927). The bell became the cue. The drooling turned automatic. No thought required, no digestion needed, just the association doing all the work by itself.

Skinner picked up from there with operant conditioning, which handles the reward half of things. His findings weren’t shocking once people heard them: if someone does something and gets a good outcome, they will probably repeat it; likewise, if someone does something and gets a bad outcome, they will not repeat it (Skinner, 1938). But Skinner wasn’t only talking about things that feel nice. For him, “reward” just meant anything that made a behaviour more likely to happen again; that’s it, that’s the whole definition. That is why people stay stuck in habits that don’t feel good. If someone bites their nails, it is not because they like it; no one is really thrilled to be scrolling at 1 am either. But if it takes the edge off anxiety, even for a second, the brain quietly counts that as a win.

There’s a part of Skinner’s work that tends to get left out whenever this gets retold. Random rewards build stronger habits than reliable ones. And that is exactly the reason people can’t put their phones down (Skinner, 1938). Most checks turn out to be nothing at all. But every so often there is something, like a message, and it’s really that uncertainty, not the reward, that keeps people coming back.

How Long Does It Actually Take?

The commonly cited “21 days to form a habit” is inaccurate. It originates from Lally et al (2010) at University College London. In a study investigating habit formation for behaviours like drinking water at lunch and exercising, participants took 18 to 254 days to build a routine. Easy habits took hold fast. Anything harder, anything requiring actual change instead of just adding a step, dragged on much longer.

What rarely makes it into the popular retelling is that a day here and there didn’t really throw anyone off track (Lally et al., 2010). People hold up better than any habit app gives them credit for. Skip the gym one day, and it’s just a skipped day. Not a failure, not a reset button. The brain’s stitching together an association over months, not grading anybody on a perfect streak.

Habits vs. Willpower

Here’s a genuinely useful takeaway from all this: habits and willpower aren’t running on the same system, and treating them like they are usually backfires. Wendy Wood’s research found something like 43 per cent of what people do each day is habitual: same spot, same headspace, next to zero thought behind it (Wood & Neal, 2007). Almost half your day, running itself.

That matters because it pushes back on a lot of standard self-control advice. Willpower is limited. It wears down. Habits don’t work that way; they keep running (Wood & Neal, 2007). Which is probably why trying to break a bad habit with willpower alone usually falls apart. What actually tends to work, per this research, is changing the environment instead of fighting the behaviour directly.

Rewiring Instead of Erasing

Duhigg makes a point most behaviourists would also make: no one can really delete a habit, but they can swap it (Duhigg, 2012). The cue usually lasts. The reward, more or less, lasts as well. What changes is the routine sitting in between. Somebody who stress eats isn’t going to unlearn that connection overnight. But run a different routine enough times- a walk, a phone call, a piece of gum- and it can start delivering the same relief the old one used to. That’s operant conditioning doing its thing; keep reinforcing the new routine, and it eventually pushes the old one out.

Why This Matters

None of this makes habits vanish, and it’s not a reason to skip discipline either. What it does is answer something a lot of people wonder about quietly: why does someone keep doing a thing they don’t even want to do anymore? Because it was never a daily decision in the first place. It’s a groove worn into the brain by repetition, kept alive by whatever small reward followed each time. Behaviourists were describing this mechanism long before Duhigg gave it a catchy name, but the core point hasn’t changed: reward something enough times, and eventually it stops feeling like a choice at all.
