This moment isn’t just about the celebration, it’s about the reflection. The transition from year to the next provides a unique opportunity for what psychologists call  ‘temporal self-appraisal”. The new year is not merely a shift in the calendar, it is an invitation to pause, think and reconsider.

It offers an opportunity to look back on the past year with honesty and grace and look back on the past year with honesty and grace and look forward with hope and determination. One of the most powerful tools for this process is temporal self appraisal, a way of evaluating our past selves to better understand who we are today and who we want to become. New year brings new energy and vibes. People get it and start flowing  with it.

Why is the new year Significant for Reflection?

There’s something universally motivating about the new year. It’s a time when the world  collectively agrees to let go of the old and welcome the new. From making resolutions to  setting goals, people see Journey 1st as a clean slate- a chance to rewrite their stories. But how  often do these resolutions fade away by February? The issues often lie not in the goals  themselves but in the mindset behind them.

A fresh mindset doesn’t just mean creating a to-do list or setting lofty ambitions. It’s about  introspection and understanding why those goals matter. Temporal self-appraisal helps bridge the gap between reflection and resolution offering a more grounded and meaningful way to  navigate personal growth.

What is Temporal-self Appraisal?

Temporal self-appraisal is the act of evaluating your former self in relation to your current  self and intended future self. It is a psychology-based practice that recognizes identity  mobility. Instead of considering yourself as a static person, it allows you to accept growth,  change, and even mistakes as part of your path.

This practice entails asking questions like,

Who was I last year?

What were my own strengths and weaknesses?

Who am I now? How have I developed or changed?

Who do I hope to be in the coming year?

What measures should I take to get there?

By answering these questions, you will obtain a clear picture of your own progress and  insight into what is most important to you.
