the-benefits-of-playing-dumb

No one likes to be known as a dumb person, everyone wants to be known for being intelligent, and dependable but there are many disadvantages to being such a person. For example in many group settings, the smartest ones are the ones who have to work hard and make sure they can guide others to, they are the ones that will be held accountable for any mistakes. Even your peers can take you as being clueless to some extent impacts my capacity to act selfishly in a way that is not noticed. Because negligence is taken as ignorance, one is not suspected of being intentionally selfish.

Benefits of playing Dumb

A person who plays dumb would behave less responsibly, and many small benefits like :

  • Gathering information: When having a conversation with someone who might be not so aware, we end up giving them information in a concise manner. Although you may appear to be a fool, this can make people greatly share with you the information which will eventually help you discover missing knowledge about the world or bring new understanding,
  • Avoiding Conflict: In certain situations, misunderstandings between two individuals can potentially escalate into conflict. However, this can often be avoided by feigning innocence or playing dumb. Making it possible to ensure that the relationships remain cordial and moving forward. For example someone asks “Why didn’t you do as you were told?“ in an angry tone, one can calm that person down by saying “ I was not aware.“ or “ I was not able to do so as I can’t understand something, can you help me?”
  • Lowered Expectations: It is possible in such a situation that other people might overlook your talents and knowledge, thus they may allocate you simple chores only or may not have high expectations from your work. However, all of these may result in your ease of exceeding their expectations. Such a move can be beneficial in a professional world where you endeavour to exceed expectations.
  • Building Rapport: The skill of an utterance of naivety and clueless can elicit sympathy and connectivity from others. Human beings are generally curious ones, who will want you for their social circle and will therefore cause stronger bonds among people.
  • Strategic Manoeuvring: In some challenging contexts, portraying yourself as less skilled than you are might be part of an intelligent tactic. Through undermining your abilities or competencies, you can bring up rivals’ sense of confidence, and use it to serve your advantage once you have fallen into the right moment to show off your skills.
  • Flying under the radar: Going under the radar, when you seem like someone who is not quite aware or knowledgeable, you can often use this to avoid giving information, taking accountability, and maintaining one’s personal feelings, might even avoid getting Into trouble.

Being an Idiot

Individuals who don’t have to resolve complicated situations as well as cause any tensions among others are more liked. Such a coping state can positively influence someone with the role-playing jest of the “idiot”. Some individuals want to befriend the “ joker” as, they may seem smarter than them, maintain their self-esteem, and are not viewed as a threat by others.

Responsibility: Utilisation of pleadings like ‘I don’t know’ or giving someone an impression that you were not aware gives one a sense of security which is derived from not being held responsible or to blame by someone else.

Less task: Having free time can be a consequence of no need to be concerned about decision-making or problem-solving. As a result, you will be absorbed in additional tasks that can cause either responsibility or burden.
