Progress Isn’t Always Linear: Be Ready to Face Challenges in the Journey

Have you ever given up on a goal or felt disappointed because you believed you were “falling off track” or not making as much progress as you would have liked to? We frequently become disheartened when we do not see linear progress towards the goals we have set. But in reality, we will frequently experience setbacks, and growth takes time. It is crucial to keep in mind that progress is rarely linear, regardless of whether we are working towards our recovery, a good diet, fitness ambitions, job goals, or any other personal goals.

Remember that progress is not always linear. It necessitates a lot of zigzagging and continual route correction. Accidents happen, unfortunate events occur, and setbacks are typically painful, but it does not mean we give up.

Progress requires persistent hard work and dedication as our life is completely filled with unexpected events and circumstances which would lead us to certain paths which we have never imagined or thought of. Obstacles along the path is extremely normal, it’s up to us how we adjust to it and make a way through it. While working on your goals keep the Iceberg illusion in the mind. We tend to see the tip of the iceberg or the end goal of people’s achievements and start comparing with those but we fail to look at what lies beneath the surface, including perseverance, disappointment, discipline, dedication, sacrifice, failure, and all the hard work necessary for the end result. Let’s take this example as we examine our individual aspirations as we know a big journey begins with small steps.

It’s very important to trust the process. At times people regress before getting progressed. It is essential to understand that every time we feel we are regressing. We are not going back to ground zero, but instead, we are facing our fears, getting stronger, and each time we begin from a higher baseline.

Few examples

Just take an objective look at the problem. Consider what happened, for instance, if you put on a pound or two in a week. Don’t lose hope or give up. If you’ve done an adequate task of sticking to your macros, the weight increase may be caused by something else. Perhaps you had a particularly salty meal the night before the weigh-in. In that scenario, you’ll be retaining extra water, making you appear more puffy and heavier or possibly you had an insufficient stretch of sleep. That can result in a slight weight increase. Give it another week before making any dietary changes and observe the results. Try reducing your calories somewhat if you’re still gaining weight or have reached a plateau.

While controlling on your anger you encountered a day when you completely lost your temper and acted so aggregately, don’t get down or feel disappointed about the same. Instead look at the cause behind it, what made you lose your temper? Were you under any kind of stress? Were you disheartened at that day ?
Clients often taking therapy after the loss of their loved one expect their growth to be straightforward, which means going forward and upwards all the time. Hoping that they will continue to feel better and better with every passing day But this isn’t how it works actually. However, it is far more prevalent for people to move forward, encounter a setback, gain insight into it, bounce back, and then flourish once more.

Tips For Not Falling Off Track From Goals

Assessing our goals to be realistic, and alongside being patient while practicing self-compassion is very essential part of the process. Trusting the entire process and setting short-term goals within the long-term goals. Taking setbacks as an opportunity to grow and reassess. Celebrating small achievments and accomplishments. This all would help in coping and always remember that getting started on your goals takes an immense amount of courage and faith and you are on the right path so keep moving forward. Doing yoga and meditation on a regular basis helps in striking a balance on the thinking pattern and the overall well-being of an individual.

It is customary for us to go back to our previous routines, behaviors, and ways of thinking when a stressful event or major life upheaval happens. Learning to identify these “loops” in life and implementing strategies to deal with them is a part of the psycho-spiritual development process. Practicing self-care, and compassion, accessing support whenever needing it, reflecting on the setback and learning from it, and incorporating positive thinking and moving forward with that helps in the healing journey.

Reflecting on Personal Growth

Just like a muscle needs to tear to grow stronger, sometimes we need to wade into our own darkness to find a brighter light. We all go through phases in life in which we need to learn lessons that make us feel remorseful, frustrated and impatient at that very moment. But if we look back on our lives, we would recognize how far we have come despite of peaks and valleys. Every hardship comes for our personal growth, experiencing peaks and valleys, sometimes just an inch or maybe miles at times. Growth isn’t always steady, consistent, and ascension toward perfection. I have realized it over time that challenges are opportunities for growth, healing and development. Hardships often foster insight, awareness, compassion, strength, resilience, and wisdom in individuals. It all depends on us how we view those challenges and implement strategies to overcome it.
