25 years old, Noelia Castillo Ramos from Barcelona, passed away with the help of voluntary euthanasia on March 26, 2026. Euthanasia is a process that hastens the process of death to avoid suffering. Active euthanasia involves the administration of lethal drugs to end the life of an incurable or terminally ill patient. Passive euthanasia refers to withholding or withdrawing treatment necessary for survival or maintaining life.
Before leaving quietly, she fought a long legal battle in court against her father for her choice to die. Her decision comes from her sufferings with unimaginable layers. Her case dragged on for some years, which delayed her euthanasia procedure. In 2025, after her statement to the judge that she wanted to finish with dignity once and for all, in early 2026, the Constitutional Court sided with her.

The life story of Noelia Castillo Ramos
For 4 years, Noelia lived with mental health conditions, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and Borderline personality disorder. She lived in a home that was state-supervised to protect her. Her father’s problems with alcohol, parents’ separation and being sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend and several men in a nightclub impacted her mental health to the point that she wanted to end her life. She attempted suicide in October 2022 by jumping from a window on the fifth floor, increasing he disability to 74%. She survived but suffered from paralysis from the waist down. Also, she experienced chronic pain.
The Legal Battle
Euthanasia was legalised in Spain in 2021 for those with incurable conditions and unbearable suffering. In Noelia’s case, her father was against her choice. Although she was granted the right to assisted dying in 2024 by the Catalan regional government, the process was suspended at the last moment after legal objections raised by her father. Her father was supported by Christian lawyers. Her father argued that she couldn’t make a rational decision as she suffered from mental health disorders with 67% disability, so it is the state’s duty to keep her alive.
Noelia’s decision to end her life was fiercely opposed till the end. She said that a father’s, mother’s or sister’s happiness doesn’t have to come before a daughter’s. A former friend of Noelia, Carla Rodriguez, tried to persuade her to change her mind, but the police barred her from entering the hospital. She loved her family, but what she realised was that they couldn’t feel the fire she was standing in every day. Her case dragged on for 18 months. Her plea was not an impulsive act. In an interview, she stated that she couldn’t take the pain anymore. In 2026, the Constitutional Court confirmed that her autonomy and right to end her suffering were hers.
The Final Decision
Under Spain’s 2021 law, any Spanish adult above the age of 18 requesting euthanasia must be suffering from an incurable disease or serious, chronic and disabling condition, and their decision must be taken free from external pressure. The decision needs to have been made twice in writing and has to be certified by a doctor who then consults with another doctor. Her mother, who disagreed with her choice, joined her at Sant Camil Barcelona clinic, where she underwent euthanasia.
