Abu Dhabi announced the launch of a global awareness campaign about Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism Spectrum is a group of disorders that typically begins in preschool years, characterised by deficits in social communication, social interaction, difficulty in socio-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communication behaviour and social relationships. According to the WHO, one in 127 persons had autism. The campaign was unveiled at the 4th International Autism Conference 2026. It was held under the patronage of Khalid Bin Zayed Al Nahyan from April 25 to April 28, 2026.
Building an Inclusive Society
The awareness campaign by Abu Dhabi emphasizes on humanitarian message under the slogan “Smile, your smile is enough to make them happy”, highlighting that acceptance begins with a smile. Amina Al Haiden, CEO of the International Autism Conference, emphasised that a smile is not merely a symbol but a universal language that fosters acceptance, breaks barriers and opens new horizons for communication and understanding among different segments of society. She also added that the idea for the campaign originated in the 3rd edition of the conference in 2025.
The campaign aims to evolve into a global community movement that promotes positive interaction and inclusion and contributes to building a society that is more understanding and inclusive. The ambassadors of the campaign are individuals with autism. They will be sharing their experiences and inspiring stories to reinforce empowerment and help society better understand their capabilities and potential. It also reinforces empowerment and self-advocacy as individuals with autism express their needs and defend their rights independently.

Initiatives to be Taken Under the Campaign
Activities planned under the campaign include:
- A digital platform is to be launched to enable individuals and institutions to join actively and contribute to spreading the campaign’s message on a larger scale.
- A series of initiatives and interactive activities are also included, like field visits including schools, colleges, universities and other Public and private institutions.
- Participation in community events nationwide
- Production of digital awareness content
- Launch of the Autism Voices platform
- Training programs and support sessions for the development of a sustainable community network of supporters.
With all these initiatives planned under the campaign, Abdullah Abdul Aali Al Humaidan, the Secretary General of the Zayed Authority for People of Determination. It stated that this campaign is truly translating its message of awareness into simple everyday behaviour with profound impact. This will enhance acceptance and bridge gaps within the society. This campaign also aligns with the UAE’s “ Year of the Family 2026”. This emphasises the role of family as the most important in supporting and empowering individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Dr Pusha Al Mehairi, Director of Moza bint Suhail Centre, stated that raising awareness about autism is not optional but a humanitarian as well as developmental necessity requiring efforts from all segments of society, individuals and institutions of all ages, backgrounds and specialities.
