December jingles, November diyas, and October drum festivals arrive like a sensory tidal wave. For most, overstimulation is part of the thrill. The louder, brighter, busier it gets, the more alive the celebration feels. But not everyone experiences joy as an amplification game. Imagine a room filled with lights sharp enough to sting, music textured like static and conversations that overlap until words stop sounding like language. Now layer this with financial pressure, disrupted routines, past trauma or a brain that cannot filter noise from signal. For vulnerable groups, festive cheer can shift from celebration to strain, from togetherness to retreat, from memory-making to quiet survival. 

Research shows that many individuals process sensory input far more intensely than the average person, leading to anxiety, distress and withdrawal when environments become overwhelming (Carter et al., 2011). Others navigate festivities with added psychological load, autistic adults who avoid community events due to sensory stress (Bagatell et al.,  2022), trauma survivors for whom loud celebratory triggers resemble threat responses, or older adults with Dementia who experience agitation when routines and surroundings change too fast.

Even people without clinical labels can struggle under the hidden seasonal weight. Large surveys by the American Psychological Association (2023) reveal that holiday expectations, monetary worries and social obligation spikes create measurable stress in the general population. Festivals are meant to unite, but for many, they exhaust before they embrace. The question is not whether sensory overload exists in celebration—it clearly does. The real question is: who quietly pays for the world’s loudest joys? And how can we design festivals that don’t demand resilience as an entry ticket to belonging?

Why Festive Environments Overloaded

Two linked ideas help explain who is vulnerable: (1) some people have a biological or developmental tendency to register sensory input more strongly, and (2) stressful social and financial demands during holidays add extra load.  

Sensory over-responsivity (SOR) is the area of research that has shown that a substantial number of individuals react significantly to everyday sensory experiences such as bright lights, strong odours, loud noises, crowded places, etc. Research has concluded that both children and adults who demonstrate SOR demonstrate increased levels of anxiety, the presence of difficulty controlling behaviour and increased levels of family stress. All of this has been documented to lead to limitations on the ability to participate in public events  (Conelea et al., 2014). In other words, the same party that feels exciting to one person can feel painful and threatening to another (Carter et al., 2011).  

A related concept is sensory processing sensitivity or “high sensitivity,” a trait studied using brain imaging. fMRI work shows that highly sensitive people often show stronger neural responses to sensory input, which helps explain why they can be more easily overwhelmed by crowded, noisy festive settings (Greven et al., 2019). Together, the behavioural and neural evidence make a clear point: sensory load matters, and it matters differently across people.

Who is Particularly at Risk?  

Not only does everyone experience some degree of stress during the holidays, but those individuals listed above have heightened levels of risk because the sensory and social obligations add a layer to that already existing vulnerability

Autistic individuals frequently exhibit their sensory differences as part of their daily existence. The differences predict how and if an autistic individual will be able to participate in community activities. Sensory overload is often cited as a primary reason for families to either reduce the number of holiday-related events they attend or completely avoid them. When routines change suddenly during festivals, this can add to the sensory challenge and increase distress (Bagatell et al., 2022).  

For individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or trauma histories,  some aspects of holiday fireworks, loud music, smells associated with holidays, and large crowds serve as triggers for feeling panic, having flashbacks, or experiencing high levels of anxiety due to units of time that can cue traumatic memories. For certain veterans and survivors of trauma, events associated with sudden sounds, loud music and/or crowded public gatherings are often perceived as threats rather than times for celebration. 

1. How the Holidays Impact Dementia and Anxiety

The vulnerable population of those with dementia who are older people can also suffer due to holidays. Any change in their daily/weekly routines, large numbers of people visiting, new decorations and lots of noise can cause the person suffering from dementia confusion, agitation and/or distress from the many demands placed upon them resulting from the holidays. Caregiver guidance from specialist clinics highlights that overstimulation is a frequent cause of short-term worsening of behaviour and mood in dementia.  

Individuals who suffer from anxiety disorders, mood disorders or have limited financial resources experience even greater levels of risk associated with the holidays. Sensory over-responsivity to their environment is often linked to anxiety disorders. When combined, those two factors mean the sensory (sight, sound, smell, taste) and social. And financial aspects of holidays can exacerbate anxiety-related symptoms (Green and al., 2010). Add to that the stress of gift-giving/travel-induced financial concerns with the holidays. It is one of the most common, well-documented causes of distress associated with the holidays for the general population (APA, 2023).

How Overstimulation Harms  

Overstimulated people may experience a variety of problems depending on their unique circumstances and situations. However, the following are some of the most common repercussions: 

  1. Immediate distress and functional impairment: Overload can lead to panic, crying, shouting, meltdowns or withdrawal. For autistic people and those with SOR, the sensory barrage can make even simple tasks—eating, moving through a room, talking—impossible without a break (Bagatell et al., 2022).
  2. Worsening of psychiatric symptoms: For people with PTSD, anxiety or depression, triggered memories or prolonged stress during the holidays can lead to symptom spikes or require increased clinical support after the season (Green et al., 2010). 
  3. Strain on caregivers and family relationships: Caregivers of people with dementia or autism often report increased burden and exhaustion during busy holidays. When routines are disrupted and support is reduced (Carter et al., 2011). 
  4. Reduced community participation and social isolation: If public festive spaces are consistently overwhelming, it affects people. And families may stop participating in community life. That steady withdrawal increases loneliness and reduces access to social support (Bagatell et al., 2022). 
  5. Physical health risks at the population level: Some epidemiological studies show increases in certain health events during holidays—like cardiac events and other stress-related outcomes—suggesting that the combined pressure of social obligations, sleep disruption, changes in routine and stress can have measurable physical effects  (Sansone et al., 2011). While these signals are complex and not the same for everyone, they remind us that the cost of stress is not only emotional.

Practical Approaches that Help  

Evidence supports several practical approaches that reduce overstimulation and make festive activities safer and more welcoming. Interventions that are available to deal with the impact  of holidays operate on three levels:  

1. Individual and Family Intervention (simple/low-cost): 

  • To reduce how busy the event is, it would be a good idea for you to arrive at the event at least one hour earlier than the time when most people will arrive and leave before the event is too crowded. 
  • Bring some of the items that you use to help regulate your senses (e.g., noise-cancelling headphones, stylish sunglasses). And any other items that you find soothing and comforting when you feel anxious. 
  • Confirm the exact break times and the event’s start and end schedule with the organisers. 

These strategies are based on recommendations from the literature regarding occupational therapy and sensory issues (Yuan et al. 2022).  

2. Event and Host Adjustments (high impact, low complexity):  

  • At events, provide a designated quiet room or area where individuals can retreat.
  • Keep the volume of music and other sounds as low as possible without drastically reducing the volume of ambient sound, and provide periodic breaks in the music.
  • Provide information to individuals attending events concerning the expected number of attendees, loud activities, and food smells, so that they can come prepared.
  • These changes are practical and have backing from both clinical reviews and NGO guidance as effective environmental accommodations (Yuan et al., 2022).  

3. Community and Policy Actions (broader reach):  

  1. Collaborate with the event organiser(s) to make sure that they create a sensory-friendly event on the days/times with lower expected attendance and lower lighting levels.  
  2. Frontline staff will be able to support those who may experience distress by being trained to identify signs of distress and provide a calming space for people who are experiencing distress. 
  3. There are several health messages related to public health, including the ability to take breaks. And receive assistance with money or resources while celebrating during holiday seasons. 

Population guidance from health services and charities highlights these adjustments as helpful to people with dementia, PTSD and sensory disabilities.

Evidence for Interventions  

Research shows that several interventions, including occupational therapy, environmental alterations, and sensory regulation tools, effectively decrease sensory distress. Occupational Therapy Techniques, Sensory Regulation Tools and Environmental Alterations provided with clinical samples show empirical support (Yuan et al 2022). In addition, several interventions provide evidence for their potential effectiveness, and a mixed level of effectiveness for causing the desired results.

The mixed evidence demonstrates the importance of Personalisation for the Individuals affected. Furthermore, providing single, modest modifications such as lower volume, signage, and quiet rooms can provide support for a larger number of people and are typically low-cost to implement (Yuan et al 2022). 

Checklist for Less Harmful Holidays  

Easy Steps for Hosts, Event Planners and Communities:  

  1. Provide Event Details in Advance (Noise Level, Expected Crowd Size, Timing). 
  2. Create and signpost a quiet retreat area.  
  3. Offer a low-sensory session (earlier time, lower lights/sound).  
  4. Avoid surprise loud activities (fireworks, sudden announcements).  
  5. Encourage flexible participation (come and go; short visits welcome). 
  6. Provide financial support options (community toy banks, food assistance lists) or signpost resources to reduce money stress.  

These measures provide respect for the different requirements of all, without taking away from the celebratory aspects of a Holiday.  

Conclusion  

Culturally, holidays are significant and have a positive emotional impact on those who celebrate them. But for many, the festive season brings a real cost. Clinical and Neuroscience data provide insights into the specific ways in which some individuals may have heightened responses to sensory or social load (i.e Acute Stress Reaction and General Anxiety Disorder) (Acevedo et al 2014), and the increased overstimulation resulting from those complaints have contributed to increased instances of poor mental health outcomes, lower participation rates and increased caregiver burden (Bagatell et al 2022).

There are many ways we can prevent or minimise the effects of public holiday celebrations. Making environmental improvements, encouraging open communication and allowing flexibility with both hosts. And public event planners will go a long way to creating an enjoyable holiday season for everyone (Yuan et al.,  2022).

Making the Season Brighter for Everyone

Festive celebrations typically mean spending money to create an atmosphere of joy.  However, by educating people about the impacts of their actions. We hope to help them understand that small changes in their typical processes will enhance their ability to create joyful seasons for the most vulnerable members of society.
