About the Institute

Gwalior Mansik Arogyashala is an autonomous institute under the Department of Medical Education in Madhya Pradesh. This institute is also a mental hospital and a major psychiatric centre of the state. Initially built with the purpose to function as a Mental Asulym in 1935. Since then, it has undergone a substantial adjustment because of improvements in medical science, along with the honorable Supreme Court’s intervention in 1994, and NHRC’s oversight since 1997.

Numerous public interest lawsuits were brought before the honorable Supreme Court because of the inhumane living conditions and subpar treatment facilities found in mental hospitals all around the nation. The MP State Govt. Was told to upgrade the living arrangements and medical facilities at the Mental Hospital in Gwalior in response to this PIL, and to turn the facility into a teaching facility.
Since 1997, NHRC has played a key role in keeping track of Gwalior Mansik Arogyshala’s development on behalf of the Supreme Court. The hospital now contains various facilities including halfway homes, psychiatric wards (open and closed), modified ECT, OPD, and a drug de-addiction center.
