In a recent empathetic move, Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) Pilani has revised its undergraduate curriculum, focusing on AI’s growing effect on education as well as rising concerns over student mental health. The new focus will be on hands-on-learning, research, entrepreneurship and holistic student development. The institute is also investing Rs. 50 Crore to upgrade laboratories across its Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses to keep up with technological advancement, according to NDTV.
Around 250 faculty members from different campuses and departments are said to have contributed to the revision. The new curriculum will strengthen practical learning through integration of research and project work through the undergraduate research opportunities program (UROP), advanced UROP and super UROP, according to NDTV. The funding will also allow students to work on societal challenges where they can develop and test solutions as a part of their coursework.
A credit-based approach
The revised syllabus plans to document student workload by monitoring their academic activities like self-study. It will also give them credit for experience and creativity based activities which will be separate. This allows them to focus on areas outside of their main subject and gives them opportunities to earn points while also enjoying the process of learning.
Highlighting Hands-On-learning
Practical studying methods will allow students to have direct understanding of various aspects including design, prototyping and projects. It will also allow students to solve problems in a classroom setting to allow more understanding and live experience.
More Varied Academic Foundation
The revised syllabus combines science, engineering and computing with arts, humanities and social sciences. This is being done to expand student knowledge on diverse subjects by experiencing interdisciplinary learning through various elective courses. This is to also allow students the opportunities to go beyond their main areas of study and learn new things.
Importance on Mental Health
The new curriculum will include 60 hours of structured participation in fitness, creativity, well-being, social conduct and community engagement. These will be counted as experience points instead of academic credit and will help students to relax and move away from stress on academics alone.

Impact on Student Wellness
The Supreme Court of India had this year laid down strict guidelines for all higher educational institutes following a rise in student suicides. It had created a national task force to assess whether these institutes were focusing on student well-being. In recent years, India has ranked pretty high with regard to student suicides and academic stress is one of the reasons.
Positive Impact of Interdisciplinary Approach
Allowing students to explore other subjects and interests apart from their main course will give them a break from excessive stress and monotony. It will also allow them to expand their thinking and research skills while also engaging in creative subjects. This has the power to provide unique perspectives and ways of thinking which could help them in academics as well as in their daily life. It could also open up new avenues and areas of interest for students who have never been exposed to these topics before.
Conclusion
The revised curriculum stands as a testimony to the rest of the country of the positive approach that can be taken to allow students an opportunity to learn multiple things. It offers them the opportunity to expand, engage and take away important lessons from many different subjects which will help them in the future. It also allows them to balance academics and mentally liberating activities which reduces the chance for stress, anxiety and other mental health challenges. BITS Pilani’s new approach could be the start of a new way to integrate traditional education methods with new-age developments while keeping student wellness at its core.
